MSR Design MSR

Design creates transformative and human-centric, award-winning architecture and interior design. Since 1981, our firm has produced work of enduring value, tailoring our design solutions to each client, resulting in a diverse mix of sustainable, equitable, healthy, beautiful projects.

MSR Design is the first Minnesota architecture firm to attain an ILFI Just 2.0 label. A nutrition label for socially just and equitable organizations, Just provides a transparency platform for organizations to disclose their operations, including how they treat their employees and where they make financial and community investments.

The Women’s Business Development Center-Midwest (WBDC-Midwest), a regional certifying partner of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), has certified MSR Design as a Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE).

Academic Learning Environments

Well-designed places for learning offer dichotomies to support the myriad methods of teaching and learning: support for building community and peer-to-peer learning and opportunities to retreat for critical introspection; support for active, hands-on learning and for absorbing knowledge through lectures and discussion. The common thread through all learning styles is the need for healthy, inspiring, inclusive buildings that enable faculty and students to bring their best selves. Daylight and views enhance focus. Expansive spaces that open the mind are as important as small eddies that promote serendipitous encounters.

MSR Design has planned and designed projects on higher education campuses across the country, including master plans, predesign reports, feasibility studies, and full design services for renovation, adaptive reuse work and new construction. We have worked with more than 50 colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities, Morris, and Duluth campuses), Carleton College, Haverford College, Davidson College, Drexel University, Hollins University, and the University of Wisconsin.

In addition to our design of educational facilities, many of our principals and staff have taught, or are currently teaching, in professional academic programs. This connection to current academic exploration enriches our practice and benefits our clients in project outcomes and processes. We have expertly guided our clients through campus community politics, decisionmaking and approvals processes, and funding structures.

Our higher education design work has received more than 30 awards, including two AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) Education Facility Design Awards of Excellence and an AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Award.
